    August 17, 2008

    2:00 pm

    Columbia Museum of Art

Craig Crawford discusses ways of determining the condition of a painting in order to help collectors make informed decisions about purchasing art. The lecture will be held in the auditorium and museum galleries. Craig Crawford graduated from the University of South Carolina and has conserved the work of masters such as Henri Rousseau, Charles Wilson Peale and Lucas Cranach the Elder.

In 2000 Craig A. Crawford started Crawford Conservation, Inc. specializing in the conservation of easel and wall paintings in Columbia, S.C. Craig graduated from USC and attended the first class for the Governor’s School for the Arts. In 1989 he moved to Washington DC to begin a five year apprenticeship in painting conservation with Charles Olin, the former head of painting conservation at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait gallery and the National Museum of American Art. During his eight years studying with Mr. Olin he was involved in the conservation of paintings by such notable artists as Henri Rousseau, Lucas Cranach the Elder, and Charles Wilson Peale. In 1996 he worked with James Hamm, professor of painting conservation, Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY. He then returned to Washington DC to conserve wall paintings in the penthouse of the Department of the Interior as an Associate Paintings Conservator for Olin Conservation Inc. In 1998 he was hired as an associate paintings conservator with Cunningham Adams Fine Art Conservation where he was involved in the conservation of the lime wash frescos in the Brumidi corridors in the Senate side of the National Capitol. After moving back to SC he has conserved both easel and wall paintings for museums and private clients throughout the southeast. He is a Professional Associate of the American Institute of Conservation.
